BE LIKE PABLO/Forres
If you like _ and _ then you will like Be Like Pablo. Fill in the blanks.
(Jamie Murphy, bass): If you like the old (good) Weezer albums and Moog synthesizers then you will like Be Like Pablo.
Why should people be like Pablo?
Because our namesake, Pablo, is essentially 100% positive about everything. If you are any less than 100% positive, something is going wrong and you need to take a long hard look and sort your life out. Strong message but we are pretty militant. Also, the real Pablo used to eat two fry ups a day and go juggling on the streets between drinking and looking for what he called ‘crackers’.
You’re based in Forres. Do you feel ostracized from the Scottish music scene?
It is quite difficult in terms of travel as we are a bit restricted with our everyday jobs and ability to get to a venue straight away. It would be easier being in a city so we could shoot straight off to a gig and play more midweek shows but we all really like Forres and the surrounding area so we are quite comfortable where we are. Also I think all of us are of the mindset that the quality of the music should always come first. I’m sure people really don’t mind where you are from if they enjoy what they are listening to.
Who is the most important member of the band?
I think we are all equally important. Ewen conceptualises and writes the bulk of the songs and sings lead vocals – the rest of a song’s creation is a game of filling in blanks and going a bit mad with synths and harmonies. Ross, who plays guitar, puts everything he has into the band (especially his wages) and drives the Berlingo like a madman. Jen plays all the cool synth parts, sings the female counter vocals and likes to make lots of friends at gigs. I play all the difficult bass lines, lift things about and make people remember the band. Together we are pretty neurotic but a fairly loveable bunch.
What’s your favourite song at the moment?
I know I don’t speak for everyone but I really like Kid Canaveral‘s ‘You Only Went Out to Get Drunk Last Night’ and Ballboy‘s ‘I Am an Indie Pirate and I Will Skuttle Ye’. I know that’s two but I hope we can bend the rules a wee bit!
If Be Like Pablo could be metaphor-ised into an animal, what animal would it be?
Honey Badger, without a shadow of a doubt. Crazy little things.
What’s the worst gig you’ve ever played?
I wouldn’t really want to say but will anyway…probably on a local RAF base. We had to crack out covers like ‘Eye of the Tiger’ to calm the crowd enough to not boo us. There was a bouncy castle there too with a head clearance of around 60cm. Very strange.
And finally, trick or treat?
Can we see the treat first? In fact we will take it no matter what it is and we will perform a trick for free!
